Since September 11th, 2007 Open Mic Tuesdays at The Kevro Art Bar in Delray Beach has consistently brought out a very varied mix of talented performers each week and helped to serve as a meeting place for the local arts & entertainment community. Every artist is given an equal amount of time to shine on the microphone, and every week is more entertaining than the last week.

Kevro's Art Bar has free Wi-Fi internet, beer, wine, chips & snacks, and the coolest atomosphere of any venue around. Big outdoor patio, ping-pong table, a very cool staff, and a whole lot more. Like all of my other open mics, this event is open to all performers of all genres. I can’t wait to see you there.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO RSVP

DIRECTIONS: Take I-95 to Atlantic Ave. (not Atlantic Blvd.) in Delray Beach. Take Atlantic Ave about 1 mile EAST to SE 2nd Ave (not SW 2nd Ave) and make a RIGHT on it. (Right BEFORE the train tracks - If you crossed the tracks - turn around) Go South about a block and a half, and it’s right there on the right side. Just look for this...

WEDNESDAYS:
Can You Rock A Little Softer (CYRALS)
CHURCHILLS
5501 NE 2nd Ave
Miami, Fl.

Over the last nine months a diverse folk movement has risen in Miami. It brings together an assortment of young acts that embrace music reminiscent of tunes enjoyed by their parents and grandparents, influenced by a Sixties folk aesthetic (minus the social unrest) and the old time charm of the Golden Age of Radio. Its epicenter is the acoustic open mike night “Can You Rock A Little Softer ?” held every Wednesday at Churchill’s, the legendary Little Haiti punk rock haunt. On a recent March evening at the landmark British pub, we chatted with guitarist Rainer Davies (one-half of the duo Raffa and Rainer, who host the night), singer/songwriter Jacob Miller (since departed to New York) and the riveting songstress and poly-instrumentalist Rachel Goodrich. Your Gracious Hosts The bespectacled, long-haired Rainer is extremely polite, going so far as to offer us a taste of his curry (Wednesday is curry night at Churchill’s). We respectfully decline. He’s hosting the evening single-handed, as his partner Raffa Jo Harris is in St. Louis caring for an ill family member. He says the crowd is sparse because of her absence. Rainer says he and Raffa feel “extremely lucky” with the response “Rock a Little Softer” usually gets. But he begs off when asked if they aspire to the success of Jazz Jam, Churchill’s long-running (seven years) Monday night event. “We’re happy with what we’ve started,” he says. “But we’d like to delegate at some point.” Appropriately enough though—in light of the club’s punk rock notoriety—Raffa’s lush vocals and Rainer’s easy flowing guitar will share the stage with horror punk legend and former Misfits songwriter/vocalist Michale Graves on April 23rd. “Ironically fitting for an acoustic night, huh?” says Rainer. “The owners here asked us to do it.” Graves won’t be the biggest name Rainer and Raffa have associated with. The duo opened for Chan Marshall a/k/a Cat Power at Studio A several months ago, and baked cookies for the chanteuse. “Her security took them and we did not even get to see her,” he said. “We don't really know if she even got the cookies, and we didn't include a card or anything. After the show, some of her band said that they were eating the cookies and were thankful for them.” As for being barred from backstage, “I get it,” he says. “She's got a huge band and Studio A has a tiny green room.” New Horizons Singer/songwriter Jacob Miller’s moody, introspective, mid-tempo debut Who We Are is widely considered one of the best locally released albums of 2007. A New World School of the Arts graduate and Berklee College of Music dropout, Miller recently decided to take a shot at the big time and move to the Big Apple. He was in town for a wedding, however, and turned in a mellow, heartfelt solo set at Churchill’s, whose “Rock A Little Softer” he compares to a “high school reunion.” Miller, with his Nord electromechanical keyboard and emotive verses, does indeed rock it very softly, yet manages a bonafide rock star quality. He’s slightly stoic on stage, but has the good looks and compelling relationship narratives that are readymade for Spin covers—and the musical aptitude and soothing drawl to pull it off. Miller often gets compared to Bob Dylan—and he does don harmonica and holder for his melancholy “You Can’t Go Back Again”--but in fact he’s more of a cross between a Jonas Brother and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Robert Been. Miller has been writing diligently since his move to New York, and says he’s “in-between labels at the moment.” The new material has a lot of Miami in it, he says, and, “like Miami, is influenced by everything…the songs are very loop-based, and traditional in nature—verse-chorus format.” Ready to Launch Fresh from a three-song gig at Austin’s SXSW/Billboard/BMI luncheon, the ever-quirky and magnificently talented Rachel Goodrich headlined the evening. Goodrich basically grew up performing at Churchill’s, where she debuted at age 16. She was her eccentric self on stage, finger picking a charango—a ten-stringed, ukulele-like Latin instrument--and blowing on kazoo on the whimsical, Andean-inspired “Light Bulb” from her upcoming album, Tinker Toys. Goodrich’s vocals have the purity of Ella Fitzgerald, with a touch of Tiny Tim’s eccentricity. But it’s the Grateful Dead who truly get her moving--she’s a hippie chick through and through. “Shake-A-Billy” is what she calls her fanciful acoustic ditties. “It’s kind of like rock-a-billy without the reverb,” she says. “Something you can dance to, but towards the folkie side.” Goodrich took her SXSW appearance in stride. Although there were a number of industry types around, she says what she really enjoyed was playing for a large crowd of regular people—“You know, shit like us, who really listened to the music.” Delivery date of the new album—“one of those recordings you do in the closet”--is uncertain. She “expects” it to come out in the summer but, with a slight smirk, admits that “it will probably come out sometime in the winter.” Whenever, she says it will be “a little more Motown, with an Etta James flavor.” Raffa and Rainer Redux We caught up with Raffa Jo Harris by email a few days later and discussed her and Rainer’s forthcoming album, a follow up to their well-received debut, Stolen Coal. “The first one is just Rainer and I, and it’s really sweet and lovely, but we wanted to have this album sound a lot different,” she says. “We’re going for a more orchestral sound--a piano, two percussionists, clarinet, bass, sometimes accordion, dobro, whistling, background singing, wacky toys, and lots of fun. We just wish we could someday make enough money to pay an 8-piece band to tour with us.” As for the new Miami folk scene she’s jump-started, “I'm really proud of all the musicians and artists that Miami is producing right now,” she says. “I feel honored to be part of this scene. There is a lot more goodness coming too! I can't wait to see what happens in Miami in the next couple years.”

OK, put a couple bucks in the donation jar, and use one of mine! Ya got a guitar or bass in need of servicing, repairs, or mods?
